Celebrating its 41st season, Music of the Baroque is the Midwest’s premier professional chorus and orchestra specializing in the performance of eighteenth-century works. Over the past four decades, the ensemble has brought Chicago audiences their first performances of many early masterpieces—among them the Monteverdi Vespers, Telemann’s Day of Judgment, Mozart’s Idomeneo, and numerous Handel operas and oratorios.
The chorus and orchestra of Music of the Baroque are comprised of 60 professional musicians. Chorus members have active operatic and recital careers; many members of the Music of the Baroque orchestra are also members of other leading ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Orchestras.
In addition to the regular concert season, Music of the Baroque conducts an educational outreach program that supplements music education programs at several Chicago public high schools. Focused on high school students interested in musical study who lack the resources to pursue their aspirations, the program combines individual and group vocal instruction by Music of the Baroque chorus members with exposure to high-quality musical performances both in and outside school.
Acclaimed conductor Jane Glover was named music director in 2002. Nicholas Kraemer is the ensemble’s principal guest conductor.
